Hannah Jeans and Jules Robinson are the proud owners of The Naked Possum at Kaituna, taking over from Jocelyn Rae in October 2011. With their own injection of enthusiasm, energy and ideas, the venture will continue to grow and flourish.
The established bush café ambience of the place is the outdoor dining atmosphere with an open fire and woodsmoke, but we’ve added more indoor dining space as well, as well as a new indoor bar.
The Naked Possum has always been associated with wild game, the main fare currently coming from the kitchen being pies and open sandwiches, goat curries and wild pork pies. But the increased efforts spent baking has made an impression on the menu. One thing Hannah and Jules hope will attract a few locals to come up is their Friday steak nights, along with hearty ‘farmer’s brunch’ available from 10am to Noon on weekends.
Needless to say both Hannah and Jules’ partners help out. Hannah’s Mark ‘Lush’ Heuvel works in the butchery at Fresh Choice, and can always be relied on to bring home supplies from Takaka, while Jules’ partner Brendon Robinson milks 320 cows but still finds time to somehow to drop off another load of firewood at the café.
Jules says the Naked Possum has always been about bringing together so many different people. “You really get to see that when everybody mingles all friendly around the fire. That’s the atmosphere we want to build on, make this place even better.”
