Farewell Spit Sand Dune
The spit is about 800m wide, and is built of shifting sand dunes up to 20m high (it is often possible to watch the wind "curling" the top of a live dune), patches of low scrub, marram grass and lupins, raupo swamps, and sand and mud flats 6.5 km wide that are laid bare on the south side at low tide.
